The History and Legacy of Walkabout Wednesday
For over 7 years, Storm Large served as Jacksonville’s 4-legged history ambassador, posing for the camera at locations in Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District and sharing weekly stories about the sites’ occupants during the town’s heyday in the late 1800s.
Storm gained a national following on social media and became the subject of newspaper and TV stories. She was the “cover girl” for the Jacksonville Review‘s December-January 2015-2016 magazine and was chosen as “Miss July,” the centerfold for Restore Oregon’s 2023 “Pets in Preservation” calendar.
The Walkabout Wednesday Club was formed as a way for Jacksonville dogs, their owners, and Historic Jacksonville, Inc. to honor Storm’s legacy and continue her unique way of showcasing the gold mining camp that became the 19th Century hub of Southern Oregon and the first group of buildings on the West Coast to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
